Unfortunately efficiency seems to be an idea fast losing popularity, so software "bloat" is approaching the rediculous (ie. Windows Vista).

Being raised on machine/assembly code, I cannot help but be concerned with efficiency. I like using the mouse as little as possible, and I still get angry when I cannot view a website with lynx! So personally, a standalone WM is right up my alley.

But Ease-of-use is what the modern desktop environment is about. Not ease-of-use for you or I, but ease-of-use for the computer noob. And what is restriction for you or I, is bounds of safety for the noob.

Sadly, ease-of-use seems to be the opposite of efficiency. Abstraction has its costs.

At least, the developers of KDE/gnome are not taking the M$ approach to development, which seems to be "who cares how inefficient it is, someday there will be a computer powerful enough to run it".

BJ.
