Thanks Aaron, I will give NetBSD a look.
As far as my reasoning, I have 2 dozen PI/IIs gathering dust, and I like doing things as inexpensively as possible. There is a thrill I get from utilizing old hardware... plus I can image the drive, and have replacement ready if required.
A PLC solution would require a network interface card, which are typically proprietary and expensive (relatively speaking). Plus the communication protocols are typically proprietary, and I don't have time for low-level programming.
Tools like interceptty http://www.suspectclass.com/~sgifford/interceptty/interceptty.html make the job really easy to slurp into a database.
