Wes! What's up buddy?
I'm typing this on my Gentoo x86 PC (2.6 kernel). I used to flop between Slackware and FreeBSD for desktop purposes (with FreeBSD always winning for servers) until Xavier introduced me to Portage, and I've never looked back. I'm a minimalist, so Blackbox is the only WM for me (I've used Fluxbox, Enlightenment and WindowMaker in the past, which were OK, OpenLook on Sun boxes, which was OK, and tried CDE/XFCE/KDE/Gnome, which I didn't like).
I also have a headless Sun Ultra 10 server. It's been running Gentoo sparc64 (2.4 kernel) comfortably for over 2 years, before which it had NetBSD for a while, and before that it was my Solaris desktop machine with a Win2K SunPCi card.
Arch sounds like it's worth a try, though I rather like building from source most of the time...
