apparently other people are having this problem and no one seems to know a fix.  I installed kubuntu instead, since it is using KDE instead of GNOME and I haven't had a problem.  Kind of enjoying it better actually.. GO FIGURE.. anyways.  Hopefully I can get a solution in here one of these days incase someone ever stumbles across this problem.
